TL DR You have to involve yourself if you want to experience the philosophical aspect in full, but it’s presented in a very kantian way of giving you knowledge to process but not forcing any conclusion on you.The game starts with the player character, a robot which resembles a human, awakening in a strange, ancient looking place. The branching endings give you some unfurling answers to what is going on in the game, which is a very central inquiry as well. You’re also driven through the biblical challenge of choosing what you believe between faithful obedience and curiosity. The purpose is for the whole archive of these files to give a taste of what makes humanity human and humane, with all the moral paradoxes that go with it, and whether humanity can outlive itself through its creations.īut you might also blaze through the game not bothering to even turn on a single terminal. These files can be excerpts from real-world litterature, encyclopaedia-type articles or even chat logs from fictional characters. Every time you find a new terminal, you’ll gain access to a handful of files. It’s served in small doses via computer terminals you encounter regularly as you progress through the game (as well as some that are not really hidden but not thrown to your face either). If you’re into puzzle games, or just looking for a change of pace from your obligatory-shooter gaming life, you should definitely check it The philosophical aspect is well-documented, but it takes good will from the player to actually get into. I’m glad they pulled that out so elegantly. When you get a new idea that gets you closer to your goal and put it to action, the game subtly encourages you by making the music slightly more present. I give the game extra credit for making the music sensitive to what you’re doing. The music is excellent, really the kind you want to hear for hours on end as you are thinking your way through all those puzzles. Some “additional” puzzles to get extra secret items are really clever and their solutions very often feel like you are “cheating” the game while it’s obviously what you are intended to do, but nonetheless, give you a great satisfaction as you feel like you “owned” the game to reach that goddamned star. The mechanics and sets of rules are clear and simple, but the puzzles are made with a masterful craft. The puzzles revolve around forcefield doors, hovering mines and defense machine guns, jammers for all these, laser connections, boxes, ventilators and, well, finding the way to access point B from point A. The puzzle gameplay and subtext philosophy are widely disconnected, but the overall experience makes sense and feels whole somehow. I beat that darling yesterday and I have to say I rather loved it.įor those who didn’t, this is a puzzle game with a heavy emphasis on the philosophical question of what makes a person a person and what defines consciousness.
